Opening Ceremony of the Edmonds Band Rotunda
This event has been cancelled due to Covid level restrictions.
Join us to celebrate the official reopening of the iconic Edmonds Band Rotunda
Check out the New Zealand Army Band Live, Bandmaster Staff Sergeant David Fiu from 5pm followed by the official reopening of the Edmonds Band Rotunda by Mayor Lianne Dalziel at 5.45pm.
The heritage listed rotunda was built on the banks of the Avon River on Cambridge Tce near Manchester St in 1929 with funds donated by Thomas J. Edmonds. It was demolished in 2012 after being damaged in the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes. But this year, the copper-sheathed dome, which weighs 80 tonnes, has been lifted back to its rightful place once again.
Come on down to the banks of the Avon to hear the New Zealand Army Band perform their big band programme in this fantastic setting. After the official opening you can stay and listen to more from the Army Band or head over to the Cathedral Square Friday food trucks for some swing and some dancing, brought to you by the Christchurch Big Band Festival. Make a night of it and check out our bands at Rolling Stone from 7pm. All these events are free!
